French Open Tennis

August 23rd, 2010

It is pretty unlikely that people will not know of the French Open tennis championship, because it is a competition which is an annual topic of conversation. In French the name of the competition is ‘Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros’ or ‘Tournoi de Roland Garros’. This tournament, which lasts for about two weeks is held in Paris at the Roland Garros Stadium, from which it got its name.

The French Open is one of the most advertised and broadcast sports events in the entire world of sport and many VIPs attend it. The attendees are fanatics who wait with baited breath on every stroke, especially when there is a close struggle between the two teams, trying their best to win. Even TV viewers actually get a feeling of being there live.

The French Open tennis championship is the second on the annual schedule of the Grand Slam tournaments and its history goes back to the year of 1891 when it became an international competition. At that time it was named the ‘International Championship of Tennis of France’ or ‘Championat de France International de Tennis’ in French.

Initially, only players that were registered or licensed in France were permitted to join in this competition, but things took a different turn in 1925, when the French open tennis tournament finally became accessible to foreign players. In 1912, the ground the players used was made of red brick dust. Actually the crushed brick was formed into red clay that covered the ground, which until then would have been a green lawn.

The public popularity of the French Open tennis tournament held at the Roland Garros stadium, dates back to a competition between the Philadelphia Four (Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon) who won the Davis Cup in 1927. It was the trigger of the desire in the French to defend their cup in future competitions. This new tournament was designed to bring back home the cup and was held at a stadium named after the World War I pilot Roland Garros. Since then the name has stuck.

The word ‘open’ was has been used since 1968, when the tournament allowed both amateurs and professionals alike who wanted to test their skills at tennis. Since then the French Open tennis tournament has also brought in some novel prizes.

Beside the regular winners’ prizes, they also award a ‘Prix Orange’ for the most correct and press friendly player, a ‘Prix Citron’ for the player with the strongest personality and a ‘Prix Burgeon’ for the one that turns out to be the revelation of the tennis year.

Hybrid Electric Engines: Some Information

August 19th, 2010

Have you ever wondered about hybrid cars? They definitely look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so special? After all, many cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking indistinguishable to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the distinction between a hybrid car and a normal car lies under the bonnet. There are various types of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most common kind has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars special from most other, ordinary cars is their engine.

Or engines actually, because hybrid electric cars essentially have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on gasoline, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of heavy-duty batteries. On the other hand, ordinary cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to investigate these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is generated by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of heavy-duty batteries. The electricity is created by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a standard car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different methods of creating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very effective.

When the car’s internal computers determine that the car no longer needs the power of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The conditions where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a significant amount of fuel, which is obviously a great saving to you.

However, there are times when you need more power than the batteries can give you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will close down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the need for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These decisions are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not notice much other that a surge of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most scenarios, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for abnormal circumstances, such as an undulating landscape.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too expensive to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on many topics, but is currently involved with hybrid electric engines. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at New Hybrid Vehicles.

How To Go About Buying A Computer

July 16th, 2010

As with everything else, purchasing a computer is straightforward if you know what you are doing. For those who do not know though, it can be a complete nightmare. People who have had a computer before have a good idea about what they require and what they would like, but for those who have never had a computer before, all the components that make up a computer can seem bewildering.

The obvious answer is to buy the best that you can afford, but this still might confuse some people, because the best is not always the most costly. In the computer world, ‘the best’ normally means the biggest and the fastest.

Just to make it more perplexing, ‘the biggest’ here does not always mean in size, but in capacity. The only large size that is important is the monitor. This is a quick rundown of how to buy a computer and its components:

Before you buy a computer, think about why you want one. If it is for educational purposes: that is surfing the web and looking up content, you do not need more than a basic desktop computer. If you are constantly on the move, then you might need a laptop, or maybe cyber cafes will suffice.

This kind of machine is also sufficient for writing letters and emails and almost any kind office work. Top flight computers are only required by games players and show-offs.

Purchase a complete computer. That means acquiring a kit of: CPU (the ‘computer’), monitor (screen), keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer. This way you will just have to plug everything in and off you go – you can be sure that they are all well-matched.

When you buy your next computer, you can buy all the bits and pieces individually to get even better value for money or a system more accurately tailored to your requirements.

Go for the largest screen, the fastest memory and fastest hard drive and the biggest memory (RAM) and biggest hard drive (gigabytes) that you can afford. You do not have to have a great deal of ’space’ for normal office work or normal surfing, but if you get into downloading music or films, then memory soon gets eaten up, although you could always add a new external (plug-in) hard drive later, in necessary.

Make sure that you buy a computer that is not too old, if you go second-hand. This is because you can up-grade computers for two or three years, but after that manufacturers change the casings and new components will no longer fit – planned obsolescence, it is known as.

Get your computer from a well-known, reliable local store and ensure that it has a good guarantee. Computers do not often go wrong, but you do not want to have to send it half-way across the country and wait three weeks for it to come back. If you are in business, get two. Perhaps a laptop and a desktop and synchronize the contents of both so that you always have your information.

Following these guidelines will ensure that the computer novice gets ‘enough’ of a deal and an adequate machine that is fit for purpose without paying through the nose.

The Energy Crisis And Hybrid Cars

June 10th, 2010

It is said that not enough people are doing enough to fight against the energy crisis. Hybrid cars can help, but definitely not enough people are driving them. Here are a few issues related to the energy crisis and how hybrid cars can help.

The U.S. isn’t doing enough really. The United States consumes more fossil fuels than any other country in the world. However, most people believe that all of our energy problems can be solved if we would only look further into the oil deposits in Alaska or if we made full use of the recent oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hybrid cars can have the result of us not having to consume other sources of energy to maintain economic growth. Hybrid cars won’t cause Americans to consume an excessive amount of fossil fuel. Rather, hybrid cars make Americans use less fossil fuel.

Fuel consumers just accept increasing fuel prices. People used to care that gas prices are much higher now than they were a few years ago. Now, however, people just take the higher prices in their stride. Furthermore, in the meantime, vehicles are getting bigger and bigger. Car manufacturers are making trucks and SUV’s, which consume more fuel at the higher prices.

These vehicles use more gas, but you wouldn’t believe just how many people won’t give up their petrol-guzzling SUV. Hybrid vehicles do eventually cost their owners less to own than conventional vehicles do. So there is no need to worry about settling for being over-charged by the oil companies.

Soon there could be an end to the “cheap oil period”. Soon, we could all be in over our heads, because not only will we be in an energy crisis, but in a peak oil crisis as well. During this peak oil crisis, there will be gas shortages and natural gas shortages too. The major countries will be forced to compete against one another for whatever small amount of oil remains.

Therefore, everyone may have some problems, and countries may have to compete for who gets oil and who does not. The peak gas crisis can be put off, if more people just drove hybrid vehicles. Hybrid vehicles ensure that people are not always having to be searching for fuel. Furthermore, there are advances being made to hybrid technology all the time.

The plug-in hybrid vehicles, for example, might not need oil at all one day. So, just in case we do have an energy crisis, Americans should really be using the meantime to get their heads together in order to find a solution to the oil crisis in America. Hybrid vehicles are the way to beat the energy crisis, and if countries still want to fight each other over petrol, at least America will know they tried to slow the impending crisis by investing in hybrid vehicles.

So, there you have it then. America’s mass adoption of hybrid cars would make it so that Americans need less fuel. But Americans also have yet to gain from the huge amount of money being made from the manufacture of hybrid vehicles. The majority of popular hybrid vehicles come from Japan. Therefore, Americans need to bring that money back into the country by making hybrids at home and do something about the current energy crisis at the same time.

Tennis Psychology (Part 2)

May 26th, 2010

The hard-hitting, unpredictable, net-rushing tennis-player is a person of impulse. There is no real system to his/her attack, no understanding of your game. He will make brilliant coups on the spur of the moment, largely by instinct; but there is no, mental power of consistent thinking. It is an interesting sort of character.

The really unnerving player is the one who mixes his/her style from back to fore court at the command of an ever-alert mind. This/her is the player to study and learn from. He is a player with a definite intention. A player who has an answer to every query you present him in your game. He is the most subtle antagonist in the world of tennis. He is from the school of Brookes. Second only to him is the player of dogged determination that sets his/her mind on one plan and adheres to it, bitterly, fiercely fighting to the end, with no thought of change.

He is the player whose psychology is fairly easy to understand, but whose mental standpoint is difficult to upset, because he never allows himself to think of anything but his game. This/her player is your Johnston or your Wilding. I respect the intelligence of Brookes more, but I admire the determination of Johnston.

Choose your kind from your own mental processes, and then work out your game along the lines best suited to you. When two men are on the same level as regards stroke, strength and equipment, the determining factor in any match is the mental viewpoint. Luck, so-called, is usually just grasping the psychological advantage of a break in the game, and turning it to your own advantage. We hear a lot about the “shots he has made.” Few understand the importance of the “shots he has missed.”

The science of missing shots is just as important as that of making them, and at times a miss by an inch is of more value than a return that is killed by your opponent. Let me explain. A player drives you far out of court with an angle-shot. You run hard to it, and having reached it, you drive it hard and fast down the side-line, missing it by an inch. Your opponent is surprised and shaken, knowing that your shot could just as well have gone in as out. He will expect you to try it again and he will not take the risk next time. He will try to play the ball, and may make an error. You have thus taken some of your opponent’s confidence, and increased his/her chance of error, just because of a miss.

However, if you had just tapped back that ball, and it had been killed, your opponent would have felt increasingly confident of your inability to put the ball out of his/her reach, while you would only have been out of breath to no avail.

Let’s just say that you had made that shot down the sideline. It was an apparently impossible get. First it amounts to TWO points, in that it took one away from your opponent that should have been his/her and gave you one that you should never have had. Second it also upsets your opponent, because he thinks that he has thrown away a big chance.

The psychology involved in a game of tennis is fascinating, but readily understood. Both player start with equal opportunities. However, once one player has gained a real advantage, his/her confidence rises, while his/her opponent worries, and his/her mental standpoint becomes weaker. The only objective of the first player is to hold his/her lead, thus maintaining his/her confidence.

If the second player draws even or pulls ahead, the inevitable reaction occurs with an even greater contrast in psychology. There is the natural confidence of the leader, but coupled with the great stimulus of having turned a seemingly inevitable defeat into a probable victory. The reverse is the case of the other player, who is apt to lose confidence and play worse. The collapse of his game plan soon follows.

How To Purchase A Computer

May 15th, 2010

It is far easier to buy your next computer than it is to purchase your first one, because those who’ve bought and operated a computer in the past already have an idea of what they require in a new computer, but those who are new to the computer world can easily become lost in the multitude of choices to be had.

The brief answer to “What should I buy?” is “the best”. Of course that response is very personal because “the best” to one person is not going to be the best to another. Our description of “the best” is the fastest and with the biggest memory, but even that can leave the computer newbie perplexed. Here’s a quick rundown of what the computer novice should do and why.

1. Buy a computer that has all the basic components. Every computer arrangement can be broken down into four major pieces of equipment: CPU unit, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. For the novice, it’s best to buy a computer that has all of these peripherals incorporated so that when it’s taken home, assembling the computer is a simple process of plugging the bits in where they ought to go. Leave the individual purchase of these peripherals to those who have more understanding.

2. Decide what you’ll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for investigating the Internet, sending email, or performing straightforward word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the basic components that we recently described plus a printer should suffice. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you’re going to need to increase your system with maybe a scanner, digital camera, tablet, or digicam as well for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you might require a good microphone and array of loud-speakers.

3. Create a financial plan and stick to it. How much can you afford to splurge on a new computer? Although the price of computers is declining, they can still be quite a large outlay particularly if you require supplementary components as discussed previously. In addition, you’ll need to factor in overheads for Internet access, repairs, servicing, and insurance.

4. Begin comparison shopping and look for the fastest and largest. By quickest and largest, we mean the computer with the quickest processor, the fastest modem, the largest memory, and the biggest hard drive capacity. Even if you consider that you’ll never require the amount of speed or space obtainable on the market today, it’s important to have in case that you really do need that much in the future. Having such a large reserve will cut down on costs when the time comes to upgrade.

5. Stay with the better-known makes. Venturing off the trodden path with lesser-known brands is again an adventure for those who have more familiarity with computers. Although those better-known brands might be a tad more costly, the computer greenhorn will be grateful for the comfort of purchasing a computer from a shop that has a long history of building quality products, and that has the funds on hand for fulfilling returns, trades, servicing, and guaranties.

6. Pick a good store. Once you have an idea of what you want in a computer and what kind of computer that you want, the only task left to do is to decide on the place where you want to buy it. There are many places, which embrace computer shops, online stores, auction sites and operated computer shops. For the computer greenhorn, we recommend buying a computer from a physical store. In a physical store, you have the opportunity to see the computer of interest itself and ask questions. New computer buyers will also have a store guarantee, returns, trades, and services.

These recommendations ought to give the computer newbie a handy start in choosing a quality computer for the first time and these suggestions apply to either Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After taking these decisions and eventually choosing one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the spellbinding world of software – a world that is just as impressive as the world of hardware!

Basic Tennis Psychology (Part 1)

May 9th, 2010

Tennis psychology is only understanding the workings of your opponent’s mind and assessing the effect of your own strategy on his/her head and also understanding the psychological effects resulting from the different external causes on your own head.

However, it is also true that you no one can be a successful psychologist of others without first understanding his own mental processes. Therefore, you must study the effect on yourself of the same thing occurring under various circumstances. This is because you react differently in different moods and under different conditions.

You have to realize the effect on your game of the ensuing irritation, joy, bewilderment, or whatever other form your reaction is. Does it increase your efficiency? If so, strive for it, but never offer it to your opponent. Does it rob you of concentration? If so, either remove the reason, but if that isn’t possible, strive to ignore it.

After you have properly measured your own reaction to circumstances, study your opponents to decide their temperaments. Similar characters react in a like manner, and you can judge people of your own kind by yourself. Opposite temperaments you must try to liken with those people, whose reactions you are already familiar with.

A person who can control his/her own psychology stands an excellent chance of determining those of someone else for the minds works along definite lines of thought and can be studied. One can only regulate one’s own mental processes after studying them very carefully .

A steady, phlegmatic baseline player is rarely a keen thinker. If he were he would not stay on the baseline. The physical appearance of a player is often a fairly clear indication of his/her type of mind. The stolid, easy-going player, who usually advocates the baseline game, does so because he hates to stir up his/her torpid mind to think out a safe strategy of getting to the net.

Then there is the other sort of baseline player, who would prefer to remain on the back of the court while directing an attack intended to break up your game. He is a much more dangerous player, and a deep, keen thinking opponent. He achieves his/her results by mixing up his/her length and direction and worrying you with the variance of his/her game. He is a good psychologist.

The first kind of tennis player mentioned above simply strikes the ball without much idea of what he is actually doing, while the latter always has a definite strategy and sticks to it.

Choosing Computer Peripherals

April 26th, 2010

When you’re purchasing a computer you must consider not only the quality of the inner components, but also the quality of the peripheral ones that either come with it or are available for it to let you to make the most of the whole multimedia experience.

Computer peripherals, from printers to web cams, are an essential segment of our computing lives and activities, if not the most important one, depending on our wants and necessities. When you are faced with having to select peripherals, think about a few aspects before making your purchase: utility, price/quality combination and the function they will have to perform.

So, when buying a printer, you must think about why you are purchasing it. For instance, if it is meant to be an office printer and it will be mostly used to print out contracts and papers, then the optimum choice is an all-in-one printer that can print, scan and operate as a fax machine at the same time. If however you need a home printer ordinarily to get copies of your digital photographs then considering a colour printer is a necessity and perhaps you ought to think about buying a laser one too.

The keyboard and the mouse are first in the computer-user affiliation and they also add a touch of individuality to your private computer. Browse for a complete set-up that may incorporate a mouse pad and endeavor to match them with the colour and shape of your computer case – even a clear computer case. These days, optical and wireless mice are the optimum choice, so buying a wireless multimedia keyboard would be a fit too.

Nowadays, clear computer cases are all the fashion and they really do look pretty ultramodern, depending on how they are illuminated. These clear computer cases fit really well with a computer on which games will be played a lot. The clear computer case is usually constructed of acrylic and is totally transparent, meaning that all the internal components are visible. The clear computer case is normally ‘themed’, that is it has a principal colour in the acrylic, most often red or blue. The case is then lit up by a series of theme-coloured LEDs which are triggered when certain events take place (for instance, when the CD drive is rotating.

Communication with loved ones is often completed through the Internet. So, why not make it perfect by buying a web cam to permit real time conferencing between friends and family? In addition, you will require a microphone to be able to hear and see your loved one at the same time and then you can chat as if he or she was in the room with you.

There are numerous kinds of computer components on the market: external hard drives, loud speakers (from small to very big), real 5.1 systems, scanners, card readers for your digital camera and loads more. All you have to do is put together a list of the uses you need your PC for and then go shopping for the required peripherals for each of those uses. The Fundamentals of Tennis.

April 22nd, 2010

I trust that this, my initial dissertation on the fundamentals of tennis, will be found useful by both novices and experts alike in the tennis world. I am trying to arouse interest in the student of the game of tennis by a somewhat lengthy discussion of match play, which I hope will cast a new light on the game of tennis.

I will turn to the novice in my opening article and speak of certain matters which are second nature to the experienced tennis player. The best tennis equipment is not a lot of use to the beginner even if he really wants to succeed. Nevertheless, one has to purchase good quality; it is a saving eventually, as good quality material far outlasts poor quality equipment.

It is vital always to wear tennis apparel when playing tennis. The question of selecting a tennis racquet is a much more serious decision. I do not like to force a certain brand of racquet upon any player, since all the famous makes are of excellent quality. However, the weight, balance, and size of the handle are the really important considerations when choosing a racquet frame, while good stringing is essential to obtain the best results.

After you have bought your racquet, make a firm resolve to use only good tennis balls, as a consistent bounce is a great aid to advancement, while a “dead” ball is no use at all. If you really want to succeed at the game and advance rapidly, I strongly urge you to watch all the good tennis you can. Study the play of the leading players and try to copy their strokes. Read all the tennis instruction books you can get your hands on. They are a great help.

More tennis can be picked up off the court, in the study of theory, and in watching the top players in action, than can ever be learned in actual play. I do not mean miss opportunities to play tennis. Far from it. Play whenever possible, but try when playing to put in practice the theories you have read or the strokes you have seen.

Never become discouraged by lack of progress. The trick of playing some stroke you have worked on over weeks unsuccessfully, will suddenly come to you when you least expect it. Good tennis players are the product of hard work. Very few players are born geniuses at the game. Tennis is a game that pays you interest all your life. A tennis racquet is a letter of introduction in any town.

The brotherhood of the game is universal, for none but an athletic sportsman can succeed in the game for any long period of time. Tennis offers relaxation, excitement, exercise, and pure enjoyment to the person who is bound hard to his job until late afternoon.

The following is the order of development that produces the quickest and most lasting results: i. Concentration on the game. ii. Keep the eye on the ball. iii. Foot-work and weight-control. iv. Strokes. v. Court position. vi. Court generalship or match play. vii. Tennis psychology.

Concentration. Tennis is played primarily with the mind. The most perfect racquet technique in the world will not suffice if the playing mind is wandering. There are many reasons for a distracted mind in a tennis match. The chief one is loss of interest in the game. No one should play tennis with any hope of real success unless he cares enough about the game to be willing to do the spadework necessary to learn the game properly.

Pack it in immediately unless you are willing to work very hard. The weather, conditions of play or the noises in the gallery usually confuse even experienced match-players playing in new surroundings. Total concentration on the game is the only cure for a wandering mind, and the quicker that lesson is learned the quicker the improvement of the player.

The best way to keep a match in mind is to play for every set, every game in the set, every point in the game and, finally, every shot in the point. A set is merely a collection of made and missed shots, and the man who misses the least is the final victor.
